What is hypnobirthing?
The word "hypnobirthing" sounds a bit airy fairy, right? But it's deeply rooted in science. In a nutshell, it's deep relaxation, alongside breathing techniques, affirmations and visualisations.
Did you know that all hypnosis is actually self-hypnosis, and we are actually in states of hypnosis on a pretty regular basis? Have you ever driven a familiar journey and wondered how you made it from A to B? You were in a natural state of hypnosis! You had full control of your car, and similarly, you are in full control of yourself when listening to, and practicing hypnobirthing relaxations. You can adjust your position or have a sip of water.
How does hypnosis work? Well, over time we have built up a mental bank of negative stories about birth and stored them away in our subconscious mind. Our subconscious mind's primary goal is to protect, so it makes us focus on the perceived danger or negative aspects of a situation. While in a state of hypnosis, and through hypnobirthing relaxations, positive messages about birth can filter through to your subconscious mind.
You may be wondering whether hypnobirthing is for you, but there is a very straightforward answer to that question: hypnobirthing is for everyone!
I take a common sense approach to hypnobirthing - there's no right or wrong way to use it. I don't expect anyone to go against what feels natural, and although I'm an advocate of physiological birth, I don't see it as a failure if you do accept intervention.
This is why I also help you to plan for induction of labour, caesarean and many other eventualities. The important thing is that you have the right information to make the best decisions for you and your baby - and it is your decision to make.
I want to prepare you for the day that you meet your baby - it is a truly unique and special day, and together we can do everything in our power to ensure that it is memorable for all of the right reasons.
Whether this is your first baby or your fifth, no matter your age or circumstances, this is an inclusive, non-judgemental space where you can learn the techniques to release any fear or anxiety that you may have and give you a confident and positive birth experience.
Birth partners are not only welcome, but encouraged, as they are crucial to supporting you and helping to create and maintain a positive birth environment. All of my classes are delivered via Zoom so that you can curl up with a blanket and a cuppa, and finish my sessions with a relaxation rather than a drive home.
